Hardware spec for SOA enters W3C |

A group of hardware and software vendors led by IBM and Hewlett-Packard has submitted Service Modeling Language (SML), which describes systems resources available for a given Web service, into the W3C standards process this past week.
The goal of SML, first announced by the vendors this past July to the, is to add network and server information into service-oriented architecture modeling. Once the spec becomes a W3C it would define "a consistent way to communicate how computer networks, applications, servers and other IT resources are described — or modeled — in extensible markup language (XML), and can help businesses more seamlessly manage the services that are built on these resources," according the vendor group's announcement.
A companion specification called SML Interchange Format (SML-IF), which defines how to exchange SML models between applications, was also submitted to the W3C.
Along with IBM and HP, the members of the vendor group supporting these standards includes BEA Systems Inc., BMC Software Inc., Computer Associates Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Dell Inc., EMC Corp., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc.
